Campaigning to track Cinereous
Vulture migration using satellite
telemetry
Since Cinereous Vulture (listed in the IUCN and National Red Data Books) declined
severely in Armenia, ASPB launched a study in 2006 to estimate its breeding
population size and clarify its distribution and habitat choice of the species
population in Armenia. Tracking of vultures fitted with satellite received transmitters
(PTTs) helped to identify the range of habitats used by the birds and potential
threats in areas visited by the vultures outside of the country. The aim is to find
out whether the species will return to its natal ground in Armenia or will move to
another country.
►
OBJECTIVE:
Common people keep the common birds common
Many species in Armenia albeit not globally threatened are rare or
declining and require special conservation measures. These may be
direct conservation actions involving local lobbying, grassroots and
creating extensive public support. Populations of many common birds
are sensitive to changes in the wider environment outside protected
areas and monitoring them can give important early warning
signs of emerging environmental problems. One of ASPB’s effective
conservation tools is the use of caretaker groups based at Important
Bird Areas (IBA) to monitor bird populations, identify threats and carry
out conservation actions.
