This publication is an attempt to show on the example of a small
environmental NGO working on local and national levels in its small
homeland and the impact it may have on nature conservation in the
country by working through the international environmental networks
of BirdLife International and IUCN. The brochure describes Vision,
Mission and Objectives of the organization, our conservation priorities,
achievements to date and future directions of work such as: direct
conservation activities, contribution to policies, planning and legislative
documents, environmental education and campaigning. The strategic
objectives of the Armenian Society for the Protection of Birds (ASPB)
set the framework for a four year conservation program divided according
to the BirdLife International’s priorities into four directions: species, sites,
habitats and people. The objectives will be regularly reviewed, evaluated
and updated.
As an environmental NGO working through the involvement of grassroots
in its conservation activities, ASPB values the contribution of its national
network of Important Bird Area Caretakers which play invaluable role and
create on-the-ground framework for the conservation of flora and fauna in
Armenia.
Why Birds?
Birds possess a number of key features which make
them excellent indicators of biological diversity:

8
They are excellent indicators of biological richness, are very
sensitive to even small environmental change and fulfill many key
ecological roles
They are common everywhere and are easy to see and identify
They live longer (varying from <5 years to several decades) than other
bioindicators and can indicate the effects of contaminants over time.
They are the most studied taxa on Earth and we know more about them
than any other group of animals
Birds have always been a source of fascination and inspired mankind
because of their beauty and power of flight
