convocation
On Tuesday, September 1, 2009,
the Class of 2013 sat together for
the very first time – an event that will
not occur again until Commencement
four years later. 2009 marked the
return of Convocation, which included
a procession of all freshmen from the
Yard into Tercentenary Theatre and
the distribution of Harvard pins, a University tradition that dates back to the
1900s.
new calendar & gen ed
Harvard revealed a new academic calendar that synchronized
the schedules of Harvard’s thirteen
schools. More importantly, it moved
final exams for undergraduates before winter break. Harvard also unveiled the General Education program in place of the Core program.
The switch allowed students to take
courses in a wide range of subjects
in a more comfortable, less demanding way.
swine flu on campus
H1N1, also know as swine, or pig
influenza, became one of the most
widespread infections worldwide.
In response, Harvard stepped up
precautions by adding advisory signs and hand sanitizer stations throughout campus. Infected
students at Harvard were not allowed to leave their rooms, not even
to go to class or to the dining hall.
