Set in early 20 th century Corsica and on the Western Front during World War I , The House at Zaronza is loosely inspired by a true tale . It tells the story of Maria Orsini , the daughter of a bourgeois family in a Corsican village . A new schoolmaster comes to the village and they carry on a secret romance , but Maria ’ s family has other ideas for her future . She becomes a volunteer nurse during World War I and the novel follows her fortunes through the war and beyond . The House at Zaronza was judged in the top four in the Flash 500 Novel Opening Competition in 2013 and is published by Crooked Cat Publishing .
