WRITERS ABROAD MAGAZINE: THE THIRD SPACE Here’s what I learned: Actually very little about the writing process. While I went to a few workshops, with so many people, the standards are just too varied. But I did see some of my favorite authors and I picked up some marketing tips. It’s all about networking. Conferences are great places for meeting people you know on-line (I even met another almond-farming-romance-writer and I’d thought I was the only one.) The best part for me was meeting my publisher and editor and the other authors at Entangled. If you’re going to attend presentations, remember to pack your glasses. The best way to bond with your editor is by zip-lining together from the roof of your hotel (you’ll never be intimidated by her comments again!) Vegas really isn’t my sort of place—way too many people. I’m no gambler – thank God. Even if you’re terrified of helicopters, the best way to see the Grand Canyon is to take a deep breath and hand your money over. Apparently I have a cute accent—loads of people told me so (it was weird though—when I mentioned this to my husband he sniggered and said no you haven’t.) If you’re a total introvert (like me) a conference with over three thousand people is probably a little outside your comfort zone. Take your swimming costume for when you need a little alone time and don’t look at the price of the poolside margaritas. A conference is no place to be shy—go and introduce yourself. So would I go again? One day, when the horror of that spreadsheet has faded from my husband’s memory, I’d love to go on another conference. But next time I’d make it a much smaller affair. 9 | May 2016
