WRITERS ABROAD MAGAZINE: THE THIRD SPACE
‘Well, I know it’s not very conventional…’
I feel like all the heat from my body is rushing to my face and drink a glass of water in
big greedy gulps.
‘It’s just you’ve been saying that you want to lose the baby weight-’
‘You think I’m fat?’ The tears that I’ve been holding back all evening finally spill over.
‘No, not at all. You said only tonight that none of your clothes fit you anymore. And you
want a bit of time away from the kids and I totally support that. I thought this would kill two
birds with one stone. So to speak. Catherine?’
‘It’s… it’s not what I was expecting.’
‘I can see that. I’m sorry, I can’t get a refund. I got a special deal. Six months for the
price of four.’
And then I look at him, properly for the first time in months. His eyes are a lighter shade
of blue than they used to be, but they’re looking at me like they always have and I know that
he has done this out of love for me. ‘Don’t knock it till you try it, eh?’ I say.
He smiles. ‘That’s my girl.’
