World T.E.A.M. Sports 2015 Annual Review | Page 4

WITHIN REACH OUR MISSION In 1987, James Benson and Stephen Whisnant organized a bicycle ride from California to Florida that challenged participating athletes with disabilities. This inclusive ride became the foundation for World T.E.A.M. Sports, a national non-profit chartered in 1993. Our team creates challenging sporting events that bring together disabled and able-bodied athletes. Reaching the next level through sports motivates our organization, where the exceptional athlete matters. Our participants undertake road and mountain bicycling, mountain climbs, rock sports, river rafting and sea kayaking. Young, developmentally-disabled athletes, along with disabled military veterans and civilians from the United States, Canada and abroad, join our events. Our challenges appeal to corporate leaders, tradesmen and women, active and retired military, professionals, homemakers and technical specialists. From the Atlantic to the Pacific and across the planet, World T.E.A.M. Sports athletes overcome physical, emotional and technical challenges. New opportunities, improved fitness, gained confidence and close friendships offer a more satisfying life. Through every World T.E.A.M. Sports event: • Participants with disabilities build self-confidence and enhance their physical fitness. • Disabled and able-bodied participants work together as a team to overcome physical, emotional and technical challenges. • Disabled athletes inspire both able-bodied participants and spectators, who see that disabled individuals can meet challenges beyond anyone’s imagination. • Other disabled citizens see the participants with disabilities as role models, encouraging others to undertake physical activities.
