MISSION
__________________
World T.E.A.M. Sports creates inclusive sporting events and participatory opportunities
for exceptional persons with and without disabilities. Our athletes include able-bodied and
disabled civilians of all ages, as well as active duty military and honored veterans from all
service branches. Our events include bicycle and hand cycle rides, team challenges,
mountain and rock climbing, sports camps, and water sports.
More than 20 years have passed since World T.E.A.M. Sports founders James Benson and
Stephen Whisnant chartered our non-profit organization in North Carolina. The staff,
managers and Board of Directors continue to follow their charter philosophy that sporting
events should include all individuals as equals, regardless if society labels them as
“disabled.” For many of these individuals, participation can be intimidating, but ultimately,
it leads to better, more satisfying lives.
AT EACH WORLD T.E.A.M. SPORTS EVENT, WE SEE THAT:
»» Participants with disabilities build self-confidence and physical fitness
through active involvement.
»» Athletes with disabilities inspire and motivate other participants. They also
inspire and motivate the public when it recognizes that these individuals are
meeting challenges beyond anyone’s imagination.
»» Participating athletes with disabilities serve as role models and encourage
other disabled citizens to take up physical activities.
»» Athletes with disabilities and those who are able-bodied learn that working
closely as teams allows them to collectively overcome both physical and
mental challenges.
