The Killing

Ryan Saladino

Today they cut down a neighborhood

Tree, came and sliced off

Its limbs, decapitated it,

And hauled the chunks away.

A mutilated corpse now looms

Among the living.

But what’s worse is that, in the tree’s

Absence, I can’t quite remember

How it used to look. If only I had glanced at it

In all its glory or wretchedness

Just one more time.
