Why Do People Hate Nickelback?

Buttrock”: a two-syllable word that utters from the mouth of many when they describe the band Nickelback. "Buttrock," as Urban Dictionary defines it, consists of “cheap, unoriginal song lyrics; the vocalist hiding his lack of vocal talent by producing a deep and 'raspy' voice (i.e. Nickelback, Creed)” (S., 3).

For years I have seen people on the internet and in everyday conversation bash the Canadian “buttrock” band. My father listens to them, and he enjoys them. As to why he does, I will never understand. I loathe Nickelback as much as any sane human being does, and it isn’t hard to see why so many people do. I figured that I would go and listen to them to brush up on the buzz around their music, so I decided to sit in my car one day after school and turn on “Photograph.”

My brother Jonathon sits in the car next to me, and for some reason he likes Nickelback.

It must have been my father who convinced him that this passes as art. As I go to change the song on my phone, Jonathon snatches it away from me. “Ah ha! I’m gonna be the one to choose the song, since I’m the true Nickelback

“Ah ha! I’m gonna be the one to choose the song, since I’m the true Nickelback fan here,” he says. I can sense a hint of sarcasm in his voice.
