Season Recap: Defense wins championships and no team proved that theory more this year than Western
Washington.
The Vikings allowed a low of four goals in GNAC play this year – one away from
the conference record – and only surrendered seven goals all season on their
way to an undefeated year and the regular season title. The Vikings are the
fourth team in GNAC history to go undefeated in the regular season and in
conference play.
Also during the season the Vikings continued a streak of 59 straight games
allowing one goal or less.
In week nine, the Vikings defense ranked first in the country in goals-against
average, save percentage and shutout percentage. Goalie Ashley Haden
continually ranked in the top five in these categories individually as well.
Western Washington also held the last two GNAC defenders of the year in
Brianna Jones and Kim Cooper.
The Vikings earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament and a first round bye,
but suffered its first official defeat of the season in the NCAA West Region
semifinals. WWU ended the season ranked No. 17 in the NSCAA Coaches Top 25.
Brianna Jones was named an
All-American for the second
straight year.
