Learning The Ways Around Town
WSD staff members, Troy Truelove and Bethany Constable, worked with Chloe Goetsch,
Roberto Gonzalez, and Jon Post, teaching the concepts of safety, weather, and making
purchases. They learned to use money wisely, to identify the lowest price for an item, to
identify sale items, to locate items in various stores, and most importantly what to do if you are
lost in a store. For the safety part of the unit, Tonyia Fulton worked with this group and Julian
Ortiz to learn how to walk in the parking lot, to look both ways to make sure traffic is clear,
and to identify various traffic and safety signs around town. Students learned what each color
of a stoplight means and when it is safe to walk across the street. The group visited Piggly
Wiggly, Wal-Mart, and Pet Smart. They walked downtown searching for signs they learned in
class. During their weekly community outings, students had the opportunity to show off what
they learned.
