WSD vs Kansas Deaf 49-19 WSD looked to build on their success at the CSSD tournament during their trip to the Great Plains Schools for the Deaf basketball tournament in Sulphur, Oklahoma. In the first round, Kansas could not defend against the onslaught of the Lady Firebirds’ offense. Junior Kori Koss was a terror on the court with 23 points while sophomore Elizabeth Besaw contributed 9 points. Almost all players had rebounds. Kori Koss also led the team with 7 assists and 7 steals. WSD vs Iowa Deaf 34-31 Although the Bobcats of Iowa Deaf tested WSD, the Lady Firebirds were able to ace the test. WSD was led by Kori Koss’s 23 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Elizabeth Besaw and junior KaYoua Xiong had 7 rebounds each. KaYoua Xiong also contributed to the offense with 8 points. DOUBLE DUTY! The Lady Firebirds basketball players took out time from their busy playing schedule to cheer on the boys. WSD vs Union Grove Christian 57-60 Senior Marika Beyer led the team in scoring with 24 points against Union Grove Christian. Junior Kori Koss slashed her way to 21 points. Both teams kept the score very close to the end. Despite WSD’s herculean efforts to stop the opponents’ offense in the fourth quarter, Union Grove had scored enough points to win the game against the Lady Firebirds. Beyer had 20 boards while Koss had 10 assists and 9 steals. KaYoua Xiong chipped in 10 points as well as 5 rebounds. GOING ALL OUT FOR THE BALL! WSD vs Minnesota Deaf 40-56 The Lady Firebirds attempted to add another championship trophy to their collection but lost to Minnesota Deaf by 16 points. Minnesota Deaf clamped down the WSD offense in the first half by allowing WSD to score only 17 points to Minnesota’s 33 points. WSD attempted to come back in the second half to no avail. Junior KaYoua Xiong and sophomore Elizabeth Besaw continued to show their rebounding prowess with 6 boards each. Junior Kori Koss had 24 points. As the result of this game, WSD took 2nd place at the GPSD tournament in held Oklahoma. GPSD All-Tournament Team Kori Koss Elizabeth Besaw WSD vs Rock County Christian 72-54 In the last game of her high school career, senior Marika Beyer led the Firebirds against Rock County with 32 points and 19 boards. The Firebirds blasted Rock County’s defense with excellent offense from Beyer and juniors Kori Koss and KaYoua Xiong. Junior Anna Dorst had 8 boards while sophomore Elizabeth Besaw had 7 to support the Firebirds in winning the rebounding battle. Kori Koss broke WSD’s varsity season scoring record with 26 points. She was honored during the game for breaking the scoring record that has stood for 19 years, having been set by Tanya Perry in 1993-1994. Kori’s season total of 379 points, shattered the previous record by 20 points. The team was coached by Steven Williams with Deanna Wanninger assisting. Spring 2013 - 17
