High School Girls Basketball Season Record: 8-10 WSD vs Missouri Deaf 67-12 At the Central States School for the Deaf (CSSD) basketball tournament in Jacksonville, Illinois, the lady Firebirds won the first round game against Missouri Deaf. WSD outscored the Eagles in the first quarter 24-0. The Lady Firebirds continued their hot shooting throughout the game, winning by 55 points. The scoring was divided evenly among three players with junior Kori Koss leading with 19, while junior KaYoua Xiong and senior Marika Beyer chipped in 18 and 14 points respectively. Sophomore Elizabeth Besaw led the defense with 10 boards. WSD vs Pennsylvania Deaf 45-16 The Lady Firebirds continued their hot hand in the CSSD tournament by beating Pennsylvania Deaf by 29 points. The Firebirds’ offense was led by senior Marika Beyer with 21 points and junior Kori Koss with 16 points. Marika Beyer also cleaned the boards with 20 rebounds. By halftime, WSD led the opponents by 18 points. The Firebirds’ defense held Pennsylvania scoreless in the fourth quarter to put the crowd on notice that the Lady Firebirds were aiming for the CSSD championship. The WSD Girls Basketball Team celebrates the school’s first ever Girls CSSD Basketball Championship. WSD vs Illinois Deaf 30-19 The Lady Firebirds came into the game against CSSD host Illinois Deaf determined to win the championship. Senior Marika Beyer almost burnt a hole in the net with 18 points while junior Kori Koss added 11 points. Kori Koss and sophomore Anna Dorst rebounded for a total of 26 boards. Illinois Deaf had no answer for the Firebirds, resulting in the first CSSD championship for WSD! All-Tournament Team: Senior Marika Beyer Junior KaYoua Xiong Junior Kori Koss WSD vs Kenosha Reuther 32-65 The Lady Firebirds fought Kenosha Reuther but lost the game on their home court. Kenosha blitzed the Firebirds in the first half 27-14. WSD fought valiantly but the deficit was too much to overcome. Junior Kori Koss scored 16 points to go with 9 rebounds. Sophomore Elizabeth Besaw contributed 8 points while junior Anna Dorst rebounded 7 boards. S
