Staff vs. Student Basketball Game A FUN and MORALE BOOSTING event occurred on Thursday, December 20 at 10:00 in the morning. Students from both boys and girls high school varsity basketball teams, along with staff who felt ‘ready, willing, and able’ all donned sportswear and participated in the fast-paced game of basketball. WSD principal and now “Coach”, Mrs. Marla Walsh stated she enjoyed that the event came together in a smooth and effortless way. People naturally helped out, knowing what was needed. Within the rst two minutes of the game, IEP coordinator, Mrs. Sandy Hoeser scored the rst two points. Staff were smug. For the remainder of the game, the score remained very close. The bleachers held the entire student body, staff and even the kitchen staff. Cheerleading occurred for the students with a most original and interesting mix of ages, led by WSD cheerleader Jasmine Perkins. The scoreboard jumped back and forth the entire rst half. The highlight of the game occurred just then. With only seconds left on the clock, junior Anthony Lange received the ball and threw it, across the court, crossing the center line and MAKING THE BASKET. Truly, the fans went wild! Anthony’s shot brought the score to once again favor the students! The 4th quarter began with students down by one point. WSD’s new Athletic Director, Mr. Matthew Eby began a layup, {The staff was smiling with the feeling of “VICTORY”}…missed it, {then DREAD}, rebounded {VICTORY} and missed again.{DREAD}. But wait… This staff is OUR staff. These students are OUR students! Their victory is a school victory! With the nal score of students 27 and staff 26, all agree this is a 53 point VICTORY! Furthermore, all agreed this event should become an annual event. WSD Librarian, Mrs. Nell Fleming explained. The idea of a staff vs. student game was on the suggestion list given by Scholastic Book Fair. The Fair wanted WSD to plan something that would encourage school spirit, as well as enhance book sales. WSD met the $2,000.00 monetary marker, and the GAME WAS ON. This enthusiastic game was just what everyone needed to ll with school pride. Everyone departed the gym smiling- some to lunch, some to the showers, some looking for a heating pad…all aglow in WSD Red and White pride. Winter 2013 - 20
