High School News By Maryann Barnett Preschool Volunteers Every Friday morning Mrs. Cheryl Trunk brings a group of high school students to the preschool classroom. Mrs. Rene Ambrose who teaches preschool says that the usual routine for each high school student is to prepare a book to read to one or two of the younger students. The high school student is also responsible to bring an activity associated with the particular book. It has been a fun way to encourage reading, storytelling, language development, role modeling and creativity! On Friday December 6, 2012 plans were altered slightly. The high school students did not need to come prepared. They were to each assist a preschool student in the making and decorating a gingerbread house. Each house was made from graham crackers, frosting, and assorted candy embellishments. Some teams opted for a typical 2 part roof. Others choose to have a at roof. One team changed their minds during the process as the roof would not stay raised. Several house-builders were photographed with frosting on their lips! One person, had frosting in his hair…and we are not saying if it is a high school or preschool student! Following the completion of the Gingerbread houses, a silly Santa movie was watched. Santa was an ornament on a Christmas tree and saw the cookies on a plate on a table and wanted them. The antics of the ornament Santa sent the preschool students into hysterics. Their giggling was contagious as all watched the outcome. Would the Santa ornament get the cookies? You will have to ask a student. Lastly, with energy to spare all of the students and staff went to the Round Room for a few minutes of physical activity. Bikes, trikes, scooters and trucks were pulled from the closet for the preschool students to ride. However, sometimes the big kids brought out the inner child to join in the activities. The high school students were asked to write about their experience on this particular Friday. Tanner Evans expressed that, “My partner was Donavan… we played together on a bicycle!” Gunner Hahn stated, “I worked with Lena. Lena was visiting WSD. She was very motivated and helpful.” Jose Zepeda-Amador explained “We all had fun making the gingerbread houses, watching the movie, and playing during free time!” Ka Youa Xiong commented, “It was an amazing morning!” Boys on wheels! High schoolers, Gunner and Tanner seem to enjoy the bikes as much as the preschoolers! Ka Youa works with Julia on her project. Winter 2013 - 10
