High School News
By Maryann Barnett
Examining, Exploring, & Discovering
Teacher, Ms. Amy Dignan is new to WSD this year. She teaches science to many
of our high school students. Ms. Dignan explained what was happening in three of
her classes.
Students in biology learned about x-rays. They were able to touch and look at a
variety of x-rays. They had to identify which part of the body the x-ray was taken,
and discuss if and what kind of damage was seen.
Students in the AED science lab learned about teeth and the necessity of brushing
regularly. They put a hard boiled egg into four containers for four days. One egg
was placed in water, another in vinegar, a third in Coke, and the fourth one was
coated in toothpaste before being placed in Coke. After four days, the students saw
results. The egg in water had not changed at all. The egg in vinegar had become
rubber-like with all of the shell having dissolved. The egg in the cup of Coke had
become a brown color just like Coke itself. The egg in toothpaste was a very light
brown. The students were able to see why brushing teeth after eating and drinking
was important to the health of their teeth.
Students in the biology class dissected a pig. Each learned how to do the
dissection, along with identifying and labeling the organs. This is a combined class
with Mr. David Copeland’s students.
Problems in School by: Dakota Steinmetz
Everyone has problems at school everyday. Everyone tends to have some kind of stress or struggles. The two largest
problems at school are related to homework and social issues such as bullying.
Everyone always has problems with homework. Some students don’t show effort or are not motivated to do it. They
become bored if they are not interested in school. Then, why do students join school. Teachers have a lot of time and
patience with the students. If the students want to be successful in the future, they need to work hard in school. Then they
will be successful in the future and get accepted to college. So the teachers prefer to make students work hard because
most of the students didn’t want to do that. I did the same thing but I looked to the future. I need to go to college to get a
chance at better jobs. So the major reason the students need to work hard and get good grades is so they could get a good
life after college or high school. The students need to stop complaining about homework, if they want to be successful in
the future.
Bullying is the top problem in the world. Kids are bullied because of their race, disabilities, or appearance. The effects
from bullying are bad grades or stress in school. The students have a hard time focusing or taking school seriously to
get great grades. Staff are becoming sick of those problems. So they’re setting up PBIS programs to try to stop bullying.
They could have good chance becoming successful in the future. Bullying is unnecessary. It will have consequences.
Bullies are silly to use it and waste a few seconds of their education. Do you want to become successful in the future?
Then, don’t become a bully and do well in school.
