Middle School News by Brian Lievens Art Museum Trip Being Artistic! All middle school students toured Chazen Museum of Art which is located on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The group visited the newest addition of the museum which was first opened, last October. The interior architecture was magnificent. The students were awestruck by its expansive design and materials. The museum provided a docent, an art expert and guide, as well as an ASL interpreter. The students and staff explored various art exhibits. The students studied Modern, Contemporary, Pop, and some international art works. However, the group was not able to explore additional exhibits due to insufficient time. Being hungry, the students and staff went to Subway for lunch then to Babcock Dairy Store, a University of Wisconsin fare, for ice cream that was produced by the University of Wisconsin students. Susan Dupor and her intern, Alison Stow, wanted to expose the students to real art works that were made of different materials, periods, styles, and movements in art. For additional information on the museum, visit www.chazen.wisc.edu. Earning their privileges for exemplifying the Firebird Promise in school, the students from middle school attended a trip to two places in Madison. “Fired Up Pottery & Glass” required the students to use their creative juices to design pretty and unique artwork on either pottery or glass. The students were given a choice to paint a pottery piece or to make a glass fusion decoration. Halina Kangas chose a pottery piece that was a bank that had a moon on one side and a sun on the other side. Malia Christenson painted a bowl that looked like Mickey Mouse while Andy Coppola designed a mug. Being a dog lover, Katelyn colored up a small figure of a dog. Zachary Henry decided to show his University of Wisconsin pride by putting glass pieces on a base that showed the University of Wisconsin logo. Showing his love to his mother, Daniel Orizaba made a pendant while Briana Robertson designed a pretty glass piece made up of cubes of different colors. The workers at Fired Up were very resourceful in helping the students decorate their works of art. After the completion of the artistic part of the trip, the students bowled at Dream Lanes, also in Madison. The owner of Dream Lanes turned on glow in dark capability so that the students could enjoy bowling with all neon lights. Zachary Henry showed that he was the best bowler by achieving a turkey of three strikes in a row! Other students showed that they still need to keep on improving their bowling skills. Andy Coppula enjoys the artwork at the Chazen Museum. Spring 2012 - 6 Clockwise: Malia paints a Mickey Mouse bowl while Katelyn paints a dog. Zach shows his UW spirit. Halina bowls for a strike!
