Rotary Club of Chapleau Pike Ice Fishing Derby - Feb. 11, 2017

This event celebrates its 20th season and usually sells out fast and for good reason. You don’t have to even land a fish to win the grand prize. Anyone buying a $145 entry ticket is automatically entered into the grand prize draw for a 2017 Dodge Ram 4X4 Quad cab truck. This pike only tournament also includes eight fish prizes for the biggest fish. First earns $10,000, second earns a Honda ATV, third takes $4,000, fourth gets $2,000 and fifth earns $1,000. There are also 10 random merchandise prize draws, which include chainsaw, fish hut, generator, etc. To celebrate the 20th season, there will also be 20 names drawn randomly for $100. As well, there is a $3,000 fly-in fishing package for two people to be won by draw courtesy of Henderson’s Outpost. The derby hands out more than $85,000 in cash and prizes.

Money raised goes towards projects in Chapleau. In recent years, money has been used to help fund the town’s hospital ultrasound project, sponsor a Syrian family and revive the waterfront. On average, the event raises between $15,000 and $20,000 for the town.

“We have a unique town,” Rotary Club president Natalie Tessier said. “This derby is a big social gathering of family and friends from all over. We have people come from northern and southern Ontario and the United States. We have a great sense of community here and we welcome everyone.”
