Ice fishing can result in some unforgettable memories in the winter season. Putting your skills and luck to the test can also produce some memorable pay days on the ice.

Across northern Ontario, there is no shortage of ice fishing tournaments and derbies to participate in. Some of these events have big prize lots, rewarding anglers who manage to reel in the big one. Many offer up big money and prizes such as ATVs, snowmobiles and boats and motors. Ice fishing derbies also give people the chance to experience different towns, cultures and lifestyles, and also pump money into local economies. The events, in turn, help small towns across the region with money going towards projects that help social services, hospitals, youth and many other important causes. Many of the major derbies take place on different weekends, giving people a chance to go to all of them.

“These events across northern Ontario bring people together to have fun with family and friends and help communities,” Wawa Ice Fishing Derby president Scott Popert said. “It’s all for a good cause and that is, in the end, helping the people in communities.”

Here’s a quick look at a few of the major ice fishing events this winter.
