CASE STUDY 1

FINDING THE WAY AT NWKAPS
Over the last 18 months , we ’ ve been working closely with the North West Kent Alternative Provision Service to develop a Maths and English Adventure Learning programme for children and young people with challenging behaviour .
These children typically find themselves not able to cope in mainstream education and , while the reasons are usually very complex , the outdoors and adventure has proven to be an effective way of re-engaging them , developing self-esteem and confidence , and raising aspirations . Through adventure we have been able to bring curriculum subjects to life , making learning possible , perhaps for the first time in particular subjects . As a result , 66 % of pupils on the programme have improved in both Maths and English .
Student focus : JAMES
James had behavioural issues and the North West Kent Alternative Provision Service were unsure whether he should be allowed to take part in the programme . However , he lived up to the trust put in him and on the whole became a helpful member of the group , working well within a team and setting an example to others . The outdoor adventurous environment allowed him to excel , act as a good role model to others and help change his own and his teachers ’ view of him .
RESULTS :
Became a good role model
