Kamal Khidas , curator of vertebrates , discuses the compelling Canadian story behind one of his largest — and most prized — artifacts :
“ Blue whales are the largest animals that have existed on the planet . Most people will never see , or get close to , such an impressive animal in the wild . … It ’ s also one of only two on display in Canada and among a limited number around the world . Blue whales , and whales in general , are iconic species . It was chosen for the Water Gallery for its uniqueness and importance for the oceans ’ biodiversity and life and also as a good representative of Canadian mammals — 50 out of 210 wild mammals that occur in Canada are marine mammals , of which 37 are cetaceans . It also tells more about exploitation of our oceans and history of whaling in Canada [ the skeleton was found off the coast of Newfoundland in 1975 ].”
