Kathy Baker Mackey March 2017 What is your first memory of creating art? Six grade, my art teacher, Miss Hilton. She encouraged us and gave us freedom to create. Do you have a favorite piece that you have created? What makes it special to you? Yes, “After the Storm”. It was a demo at an art fair a few years ago. After the demo, I continued to work on it at my booth during the fair. Over night, a storm blew into the area. The painting survived undamaged. Over the years this painting has come to stand for something very special to me. One day, the rest of the story will be told... Do you have a favorite artist you that you admire or that inspires you? Georgia O’Keeffe...is the first that comes to my mind. Monet, Degas But, so many...Henry Finkelstein, Ro Diaz What tool in your studio could you not live without? Of course my paint/palette knives, but my music, too. The music is a large part of the story being told. Do you have a favorite subject matter? In the beginning it was flowers, especially sunflowers. Landscape, nature are all components. When the abstract path began, color became a large part of the movement and emotion. What is your preferred medium? I have tried most mediums but oil is my “have to...go to”. It is most forgiving and I need forgive- ness!! I just love the luscious feel as it goes onto the canvas. It is like spreading a big dollop of butter on a hot biscuit or spreading thick frosting on a cake. kathybakermackeyart.com 96
