Santa Fe Studios Part III - Sandra Duran Wilson
“ In October of 2016 , we took a team of three to Santa Fe to visit with some of our Where ART Lives artists and photograph their digs .
In our November 2016 issue we shared with you the studios of Melanie Birk and Dawn Chandler .
This month we would like to introduce you to Sandra Duran Wilson and Annie O ’ Brien Gonzales .
We hope you are as inspired as we were !” -Kimberly Conrad
“ My studio began as a wish , morphed into a dream , a visualization and then became a reality . I have always worked in small rooms , usually bedrooms or ruggedly bare spaces when I was making jewelry and stone sculpture . When we were looking for a home , I wanted to find a place that had enough space to eventually build a studio . My studio sits on what was once a basketball court . I used the existing concrete as the floor and added on so that the studio connects with the lower level of our home . What was my old studio is now my landscape architect husband ’ s studio . I used to sit on the basketball court in an old pink metal chair that I had found discarded along the side of the road . I called it my visioning chair . I would sit on the basketball court and imagine the walls around me , the skylights , the high ceiling and the French doors that open to the garden . We began with planting trees in the barren lot and after 5 years I was able to begin building . The studio looks just like my vision and I am able to work , teach and host art tours here in the studio . The gardens surrounding me are my daily inspiration , along with all of the creatures that come to visit the ponds and trees . My wish is now my reality .”
