Where ART Lives Magazine Volume 2 Number 4 | Page 34

Lynn LaRose May 2016 What is your first memory of creating art? My mother recognized that I had some talent at an early age. When I was about 12 years old she enrolled me in a watercolor class with Don Rankin. He was my first art teacher and a real inspiration. Do you have a favorite artist that you admire or that inspires you? I got to see 2 wonderful exhibits here locally this past year. Gustave Cailebott and Joaquin Sorrolla. I was terribly inspired and humbled after viewing their wonderful work. More current artist that I follow include James Crandall, Casey Baugh, Benjamin Wu and several other artists on instagram. Do you have a favorite piece that you have created? What makes it special to you? My favorite piece changes, and may not necessarily be my latest. RIght now, I’m liking a small painting that I did of downtown Austin. It’s called “Soho Lounge” and is a small 6x12. I like the loose style, the edges and value changes. You can find this under the “Miniatures” link on my website. What do you listen to when you paint? Spotify always has a good songlist for any day. What tool in your studio could you not live without? My digital monitor. When I am painting in the studio, it is usually from photographs. A digital monitor display is more true to the photograph and the ability to zoom in and out is priceless. Do you have a favorite subject matter? Since I started plein air painting, I have this desire to paint anything and everything. I use to stick to western themes and figures, but now I find myself choosing urban themes; store fronts, store signs, parked cars, old trucks, bicycles, food trucks, urban life, waiters, pizza cooks... What is your preferred medium? Oil. It’s thick, movable, forgivable. 34 laroseart.com
