Homelessness

Fedral housing and homelessness investments-adgusted for inflation and population growth, have been shrinking these past few decades. While the fedral government announses short-term initiatives from time to time. Canada still dosen't have a comprehensive, fully-funded and integrated national housing strategy. Precarious Housing sets out a pragmatic, five- point plan targeted to the millions of Canadians. Living in substandared, overcrowded and unafortable homes. Pluse those who are living without housing at all. Housing is one of the most important factors for a healthy life. A good home is important for individuals and overall population health.

Homeless persons are defined as "sleeping rough" or using public or private shelters. People sleeping rough, which means in the street. In public places are those forming the core population of the "homeless". Another, not obvios side of the problem is "concealed homelessness". Under this catagory fall all the people living with family members ore friends because thay cannot afford a shelter themselves. In addition to absolute and concealed homelessness. Some people are at risk of losing their housing. This can be catagorized as people at "risk of homelessness". The relationship between substance use and homelessness is complex. The use of substances alone does not necessarily signal addiction nor a harmful or problematic lifestyle. In addition, many people who are addicted to substances never become homeless. But an individual that is experiencing housing instability often due to low income, has an increased risk of losing their housing if they use substances. People with poor mental health are more susceptible to the three main factors that can lead to homelessness: poverty, disafiliation and personal vunerability. Delusional thinking may lead them to withdraw from friends, family and other people. This loss of support leaves them fewer coping resorses in times of trouble. Mental ilnesses can also impair a person's ability to be resilient and resourceful. It can hold a cloud of thinking and impair judgment. No one is safe from experiencing homelessness. No one dreames of being homeless. No one chooses to be homeless and it could happen t anyone. Every comunity in Canada has homeless people, even if you don't see them on the street. Most homeless people don't live on the street.

"A plan, not a dream"

spells out how Canadian communities can end homelessness in 10 years or less by outlining the critical ingredients of a community-based 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness. In 2007, the Government of Canada estimated 150,000 Canadians were homeless (in shelters or sleeping outside). Other estimates place the number as high as 300,000. We have 4 things here. 1) We want to raise awareness of homelessness in Canada. 2) We mobilize communities and government to commit to ending homelessness through 10 year plans. 3) We provide communities with the information, tools, knowledge and coaching necessary to develop and implement those plans. And lastly 4). We proatively seek provincial and federal policy change to support ending homelessness.
