T
he Prince Arthur Cup is played every year on the two
famous Walton Heath golf courses designed by the
legendary James Braid. This year it was held in early
summer and involved 52 Livery Companies. Conditions were
near perfect but the greens were lightning fast with some tough
pin positions.
WCIT pairings were Geoff Unwin (Captain)/Michael Webster
and Peter Cordery/Rick Huckstep. They were teamed up to
play with the Chartered Accountants and the Curriers over 36
holes, but the competition is actually played against the course.
As Geoff Unwin explained “You either win, lose or half against
the par on any hole - that's it. This format is not often used,
sounds straightforward but pretty psychologically draining for a
game of golf!

This summer also hosted the Marketors Annual Golf
Competition. The WCIT Team were 2nd again for the
second year running….
The team consisted of Peter Cordery (Captain), Rick
Huckstep, Kevin Murray (guest) and Deputy Master Nicholas
Birtles.
There were 19 Livery Companies competing, the World Traders
were 3rd, but the International Bankers beat us to 1st place, by
a big margin (13).
Talking point of the day: in foursomes you play alternate shots
and walk ahead and stand to one side, which speeds up play.
Fine, did that. My partner, Past Master Michael Webster, then
drilled a low exocet of a drive straight at me. I ducked, it hit me
plum on the backside... fortunately I had a course planner in my
back pocket which cushioned some of the impact. Still took a
bit of explaining when I got home!”
The competition was won for the third year in a row by the
Leathersellers with the Cordwainers 2nd and the
International Bankers 3rd.
“The moral seems to be that we are too busy and not
playing enough golf and/or that we need more new blood. We
do hold a qualifying competition in the Spring so if any WCIT

Capercaillie Cup 2015 raises
£580 for the WCIT Charity
to the highest score by a WCIT member. This year an additional
cup was introduced – The John Saysell Memorial Cup, in
memory of his contribution to all WCIT shooting events. The
John Saysell Cup was to be awarded to the shooter who scored
the most over the whole day.

his year’s annual Capercaillie shoot was held on 15th
September. Fourteen participants had a lovely day
shooting at the Essex Shooting School followed by a
good lunch in the clubhouse. It was delightful to see so many
new names from WCIT this year; hopefully they enjoyed
themselves so much that they want to come back.
The squad was split into novices and experienced guns – as
luck would have it there were seven of each. Novices were
taken out to the shooting ground and given instruction and
practice on the traps and clays to be used in the competition.
The more experienced followed them out to the ground for
practice on the same traps.
Practice runs were followed by a 25 bird competition in which all
took part. The Capercaillie Cup itself was there to be awarded

running the shooting school for 32 years! Everyone had a lovely
day!
