2016 World Beat - Sunday, June 26 African Village 12:00-1:00 Rainbow Dance Theater: A perennial World Beat favorite, Darryl Thomas, professor of dance at Western Oregon University, and members of the Rainbow Dance Theatre ensemble will lead festival-goers in learning traditional African drum rhythms and dance steps following a high-powered performance of traditional African dance and drumming.  4:45 Parade of Nations: The parade originates at the World Showcase and proceeds through the festival grounds to the Amphitheater. 5:45-6:45 Fatima Al Wahid and Company of Friends: Born in Sierra Leone and with a Sudanese father, Fatima has always been fascinated by the culture and dance of the Middle East and Africa, and is well-versed in various folkloric styles. She returns from frequent travels to Egypt with the latest fashions for Fatima’s Bazaar as well as the latest on the dance scene. 2:00-2:45 Chemeketa African Community: This Pan-African troupe of students and community members explore the unique traditions of their individual cultures. In music and dance, they work together and share their gifts at World Beat! 4:00-4:30 Nigerian Head Wrap Demonstration: Gele is an African head wrap or head tie that has its roots in the Yoruba Tribe in Nigeria, West Africa. It is typically made of Aso-oke (hand woven jean-like fabric) or damask. Geles are worn to complement attire and highlight one’s appearance. African women wear the gele as a sign of cultural reverence and respect at African events. Demonstrated by Ola Elkanah, a native of Nigeria. 7:00 World Beat Festival 2016 ends! Americas Village 10:30-11:00 Native American Pow Wow Dancers: Eastern Cherokee Warner Austin, director of the Native American Cross Cultural Association, gives us a preview of World Beat’s Fifth Annual Social Pow Wow! Today’s sessions at 12:00-4:00 pm. 1:00-2:00 Wild Hog in the Woods: Acoustic olde time string music with slices of swing, jazz and country thrown in. Titlakawan means “We all possess it” or “We all have potential to fully realize ourselves as human beings”. The troupe promotes through Aztec dance discipline, a healthy lifestyle, and outlook.
