VPHS U15B Keagon Skeates was the best all-rounder and often my go-to man who had to open the batting with Ludwig. These two batsmen managed to destroy the steam in any opening bowling attack, with Skeates returning a few favours later on with opening the bowling. In the spin department, there was Shakoor Johaar who, alongside Keagon Skeates, managed to break even the best of Alexander Road’s batsmen. What would a cricket team be without characters such as Ayabulela Sonkwala, Justin Daines and even Kyle Myburgh – specialist fielders is what I like to call them. At first they had hands that could not catch any balls, but after a few field sessions, these guys were lethal in the outfield. Joshua Coleman and Daine Abrahams were classic all-rounders and always dependable when wickets were needed or a match had to be rescued with the bat in hand. Back Row: Keegan Assam, Logan Simson, JP van Vuuren, Pumzile Peta, Ridhaa Brown, Zamo Tana, Mihlali Jaji Front Row: Waseem Geswint,Lindokuhle Mbilini , Keanon Geldenhuys, Mr M. barry, Kyle Myburgh, Kyle Clemence, Chumile Mfazwe Lastly, my best moment as a coach was when Pearson High School had scored 376 in 40 overs against us. Expecting an early afternoon when we started to bat, we stuck it out for the entire 40 overs with Mathew Jones scoring 50 off 26 balls (one of his big sixes went so far that the Pearson bowler was too scared to bowl against him). Pearson were only able to obtain the final wicket with their last ball of the match – so much for an early day. The Remax - Victoria Park u/15 Cricket Challenge Victoria Park hosted the Remax/Victoria Park Cricket Challenge in September. The challenge took place at the Dave Weinronk Sports Complex. The schools that participated were Woodridge, Pearson, Westering and Victoria Park. The aim of the Challenge is to develop cricket at an u/15 level, as well as to provide more opportunities for u/15 cricketers in the city to play the game. Matches were played over a period of two days and the boys certainly enjoyed this cricketing experience. In all I had a blast with these young men and they have left a huge legacy that will be difficult to replace in the future. 2014 can only be described as a top season by a bunch of Grade 9 legends. Mr A Betts Each participant in the Challenge was given a t-shirt and there was an attractive trophy for the man-of- the-match in each game. A big thank you to Mrs Gow for all the work that she did to make the challenge a success. I would also like to thank Kobie Potgieter and Remax Independent Properties for their generous sponsorship. A special word of thanks to 1st Avenue Spar and the Diedericks family for their contributions to the tournament. Their assistance is greatly appreciated.
