Emerging as the Eastern Cape SANESA Schools’
League champions in both the Core League and
Eventing, was the fulfilment of a long-held dream
for the Victoria Park Equestrian team. Another
highlight was being named “Team of the Year” at
the prestigious sports’ dinner, an award which was
shared with the boys’ soccer and boys’ hockey
teams.
Despite a rather dismal start to the season, the team
resolved to stay focused, positive and undaunted.
Ongoing fundraising ventures enabled riders to enter more classes in the 4 Provincial Qualifiers in the
Core League which is run in two regions: EP (23
participating high schools) and Border (9 participating high schools). VP convincingly won the EP
chapter of the League by 12, 440 points, won the
Show-jumping, Equitation and Showing trophies,
were runners-up in Dressage, received the trophy
for scoring the highest points at the Regional Finals,
and was the highest scoring school in the Eastern
Cape!
Kristen-Lee Harrington, Tori Nienhuis, Kelsey
Hunter, Ashleigh Leedo, Storm Gorham, Nancy-Jane Huntly and Danielle Garner, were invited
to compete at the Regional Finals where there were
several commendable individual achievements.
Tori Nienhuis who competed on her horses, Carnival Star and Lyric Star, earned the highest points
overall. Kelsey Hunter was named as the top rider
in the Horse/Rider Combo on her horse, Proper Fox,
and Tori Nienhuis on Carnival Star and Kristen-Lee
Harrington on Butler’s Birthday, were placed second and third respectively. Carmen Thurnher received a third position in the Newcomer category.
