VPHS Life’s a Laugh. The Olympiad was somewhat different from those set in recent years and focused more on an academic response rather than a creative response. The Olympiad also re-introduced a separate section on language study, which elicited a mixed response from candidates. As part of their prize, Taryn and Pierre were invited to attend the 2014 National Schools’ Festival in Grahamstown, courtesy of the De Beers English Olympiad and they each received one year’s free tuition at Rhodes University. They thoroughly enjoyed their time at the National Schools Festival and made many lasting friendships. The rank order of the Top 15 was announced at the De Beers English Olympiad Prize Giving ceremony on Thursday 17 July. Miss P Meyer and Mrs T van der Merwe attended the Olympiad breakfast and the Olympiad Prize Giving ceremony. They were delighted when it was announced that Taryn was ranked 8th and Pierre was ranked 5th nationally. The Top 3 received R25 000 and those ranked 4 to 15 received cash or book prizes. Taryn and Pierre were thrilled with the positions they achieved at the Olympiad and with the prizes awarded to them. We applaud all the winners on an outstanding achievement and wish them all the best. The English Olympiad is organised jointly by the Grahamstown Foundation and the South African Council for English Education (SACEE). P Meyer 123
