VPHS Grade 11 English Festival The first workshop the learners attended was a Contemporary Dance workshop. This is a form of expression much like poetry that has been converted into motion. The workshops that followed continued to impress the teachers and learners. The last day of the festival was one of spectacular plays. We were treated to four award-winning plays that left each of us with an inexplicable sense of awe and an appreciation for the art so skilfully displayed on stage. The English Festival, in a nutshell, was about expanding the cultural minds of today’s youth, and I can emphatically say that they achieved their goal. It was a privilege to have accompanied Mrs. Ferreira and the Victoria Park learners on this tour and I look forward to many more in the future. Mr. Adrian Ryan and Mrs. Kelly Ferreira accompanied Nadia Mila, Asemahle Xanti, Olwethu Mbane, Kristen Perils, Bongiwe Mnikina, Phumela Matshaya, and Ayron Rozentals, who were the privileged few chosen to attend this prestigious event – all of whom were incredibly excited and desperate to get stuck into an astoundingly creative programme. English, as a language, incorporates copious amounts of culture, and not just literature. This was something our learners became aware of as their time in Grahamstown progressed. 110
