TRANSPORTATION TRAINING ACADEMY TRANSPORTATION TRAINING ACADEMY PROGRAMS LOCAL TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LTAP) A national network of LTAP centers (one in each state, Puerto Rico, and seven Tribal Centers) has been established by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to serve local transportation agencies by providing training, technical assistance, and technology transfer activities. The Transportation Training Academy serves as the FHWA-designated LTAP center for the Commonwealth of Virginia. ACCELERATING SAFETY ACTIVITIES PROGRAM (ASAP) The Federal Highway Administration’s ASAP is intended to improve the quality of road safety by raising the level of discussion and building upon successful safety programs. In 2015, the Virginia LTAP received an ASAP grant to conduct a series of workshops to promote safety innovations to local transportation professionals. A workshop intended to develop a curve treatment decision-tree based on roadway departure countermeasures is planned for Charlottesville. The curve treatment decision-tree will be implemented at the local level through workshops conducted in Hampton Roads and Richmond. E-CONSTRUCTION AND 3D ENGINEERED MODELS; SCHEDULE, COST AND POST CONSTRUCTION DEMONSTRATION SUMMIT In 2015, the Virginia LTAP was selected by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to host a 2-day FHWA-sponsored summit focused on e-Construction and 3D modeling technologies. Scheduled for October 2016 the workshop will bring together DOT highway design and construction personnel to share successful practices and encourage greater use and adoption of the technologies. TRANSPORTATION PROJECT MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE (TPMI) The TPMI offers an annual two-week residential training program that improves the ability of engineers in the public and private sectors to deliver high-quality transportation design projects. The program provides practical guidance for managing the development phase of transportation projects, including project planning, risk management, scheduling, estimating, procurement and negotiation as well as tools to build leadership and communication skills.
