ECE Professor Emeritus ILESANMI ADESIDA received the 2016 TMS Functional Materials John Bardeen award in February .
Nuclear , Plasma , and Radiological Engineering Associate Professor JEAN PAUL ALLAIN was named an Engineering at Illinois Faculty Entrepreneurial Fellow to focus on developing technology and evaluating its commercial potential in the biosurface and biointerface fields .
Bioengineering Professor and Head RASHID BASHIR was named the first Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering at Illinois . He was also named the curriculum co-chair for the new Carle Illinois College of Medicine .

Bioengineering Professor and MNTL Affiliate ROHIT BHARGAVA was appointed director of the Cancer Community at Illinois ( CC @ IL ), which provides resources for cancer-related work across campus and fosters connections with clinical partners .
Materials Science Professor and MNTL Affiliate PAUL BRAUN was appointed director of the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Lab in June .
Aerospace Engineering Professor and MNTL Affiliate IOANNIS CHASIOTIS was among six faculty named University Scholars for excellence in teaching , scholarship , and service .
In August , ECE Professor KENT CHOQUETTE received the 2016 SPIE Technology Achievement Award .
ECE and Bioengineering Professor BRIAN CUNNINGHAM was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . Cunningham is also leading a new Omics Nanotechnology for Precision Cancer Medicine research theme at the Carl Woese Institute of Genomic Biology , which involves fellow MNTL faculty — RASHID BASHIR and ANDREW SMITH . The team ’ s goal is to develop non-invasive liquid biopsies that can help clinicians select cancer treatment that is most likely to work for a specific patient .
ECE Associate Professor JOHN DALLESASSE received a College of Engineering Dean ’ s Award for Excellence in Research in April . He is conducting research on photonic integration for next-generation optical networks .
In November , ECE Associate Professor LYNFORD GODDARD received the 2016 Leadership in Diversity Larine Cowan Make a Difference Award , which honors exceptional dedication to and success in promoting diversity and inclusion through research , hiring practices , course , programs , and events .
ECE graduate student CARLOS DUARTE-GUEVARA won the $ 100,000 Singapore Challenge Prize to develop a portable , point-of-care biosensing system that can detect harmful food-borne pathogens in about eight hours and without the need for a trained technician . He is a member of Professor Rashid Bashir ’ s research group .
