Substance abuse and addiction are complex problems. As with many addictions, there are often underlying reasons tied to why someone uses and abuses drugs. Addicts sometimes use drugs to mask pain or emotional issues as a result of traumatic life events. Others may start recreational drug use for fun and find themselves addicted.
