Cancer Center Honors Edwards Family

The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center recently recognized
Leon Edwards and his family for their many years of generous
support. Mr. Edwards’ donations have been used to fund the
center’s Modality Imaging Laboratory, run by Cancer Center
Senior Scientist Kurt Zinn, D.V.M., Ph.D., which focuses on the
development of new methods to detect cancer at the microscopic
level and prevent metastasis. Mr. Edwards and Edwards
Chevrolet - celebrating 100 years in business in 2016 - have long
been loyal and active supporters of the Cancer Center. Pictured,

Metro Sertoma Makes Annual Donation

Birmingham’s Metro Sertoma Club recently made its annual
contribution to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.

for Prostate Cancer Detection and Focal Therapy.” This year’s
donation of $5,000 continues Metro Sertoma’s loyal tradition of
supporting cutting-edge research at the Cancer Center.

Fouad Receives ACS Honor

Mona Fouad, M.D., M.P.H., recently received the St.
George National Award, the American Cancer Society’s most
prestigious Division volunteer honor. The award is presented
to outstanding community volunteers in recognition of their
distinguished service in achieving the American Cancer Society’s
strategic goals.
Dr. Fouad, professor and director of the UAB Division
of Preventive Medicine, is one of 22 individuals from across
the country who received the award for extraordinary service
to the community in support of the Society’s mission to save
lives and end the pain and suffering of cancer. Recipients were
chosen based on their continuous leadership, commitment,
and dedication to key initiatives in more than one area of
fundraising, mission delivery, patient support, legislative
advocacy, and special event engagement.
Dr. Fouad’s work addresses the issues of navigation, disparity
and access to care in the South, where disparity in healthcare
and social determinants of health are at the greatest levels. As a
co-leader of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Cancer
Control and Population Sciences Program, Dr. Fouad has been
influential in establishing the Cancer Center as a national leader
in cancer disparities research, as well creating training programs
for minority scientists and other investigators interested in
cancers in cancer disparities research.
