SIGHTSEEING TRAINS SHOWCASE PEAKS AND PARKS
Scenic railroads across the United States provide tours that combine sightseeing with the nostalgia of train travel. Students can ride the rails to
the tops of mountains in New Hampshire and Colorado and enjoy excursions that head into national parks in Arizona and Washington—all while
relaxing in historical rail cars—through the following companies:
The Mount Washington Cog Railway
Mount Washington, New Hampshire
thecog.com
From April to November, students can board The Cog for a six-mile ride up Mount
Washington. The company’s most popular excursion takes groups on a three-hour,
round-trip journey to the 6,288-foot summit of the highest mountain in the Northeast.
Admission includes a visit to the Mount Washington Observatory Museum, and tours
of the museum and the rail shop are available for student groups on request. The rail
line will turn 150 in 2019, and special events already are taking place leading up to the
anniversary celebration.

Grand Canyon Railway
Williams, Arizona

The Mount Washington Cog Railway
The company offers trips from its historical depot in Williams to the South Rim of Grand
Canyon National Park. As part of the eight-hour daily ride, passengers can enjoy scenic
views of the rolling hills, buttes and wildlife found in north-central Arizona’s high desert.
The 130-mile, round-trip excursion provides groups with four hours at the South Rim,
where they can check out the main visitors center, take additional sightseeing tours, go
on short hikes, relax and enjoy the spectacular views, or grab a bite to eat. Students
also can enjoy one of the themed rides Grand Canyon Railway offers, including the
Pumpkin Patch Train in October and the Polar Express Train in December.
