Inside the University of Pittsburgh’s
Cathedral of Learning are the Nationality
Rooms, 30 rooms designed to depict the
architectural styles of immigrants who settled
in and built the city of Pittsburgh. The rooms
are also functional classrooms, set up for
students to explore 18th-century traditions of
the different cultural groups.
Kristin Mitchell Wenger with VisitPittsburgh
said nearly all the rooms are used daily by
the university’s students.
“(The) Nationality Rooms are considered
one of our ‘only in Pittsburgh’ attractions.
You cannot find anything else like it anywhere
in the U.S.,” she said. “The rooms are
designated as a National Historic Landmark,
located inside the Cathedral of Learning,
which itself is a National Historic Landmark.”
She said the rooms are important for
student groups to see because they provide
an education on the various crafts, traditions,
customs and religions that make each
culture unique.
Some of the rooms are dedicated to
African, French, Korean, Irish and Ukrainian
heritages, to name a few. They’re also
decorated year-round to reflect each
culture’s holidays.
