DUBROVNIK
Old City Dubrovnik
Although it’s unlikely George Bernard Shaw was ever officially employed
by the Croatian National Tourist Office, the Irish playwright gave the
country’s promotional efforts a boost when he wrote “Those who seek
paradise on Earth must come to Dubrovnik,” following a visit to the city.
Located on the Dalmatian Coast on the southern tip of Croatia,
Dubrovnik oozes old-world charm. “Dubrovnik has always fascinated
visitors with an Old City that’s entirely surrounded by long defensive
walls, which today are under the protection of UNESCO,” says Ina Rodin
of the national tourist office. “Visitors love its rich historical and cultural
heritage, abundant Mediterranean vegetation, mild climate, and of
course, the hospitality of its people.”
Travelers flock to the Old City to see its historical sites, restaurants,
shops and pubs. Significant landmarks such as Onofrio Fountain,
Sponza Palace, the Dubrovnik Tower and the Franciscan Monastery are
located along Stradun, the street that connects the east and west gates.
For great views of the Old City, the Adriatic Sea and the coastline
along the Pelješac Peninsula, groups can take a walk on the fortress
walls to Minceta Tower or a trip to the top of Mount Srdj.

Rodin says the city also boasts an innovative culinary scene. “The
Dubrovnik region is famous for millennia-old wine production traditions,
and tours allow visitors to meet winemakers and sample many fine local
wines,” she says. “They can also enjoy a variety of fish and seafood
specialties, fresh vegetables and olive oil that dominate the local cuisine.”
