Ottawa is home to some of the Canada ’ s most notable historical sites . Kelly Dean of Ottawa Tourism says two of the must-visit attractions in the capital city are Parliament Hill and Rideau Canal .
“ Parliament Hill showcases Canada ’ s working government , and you can experience it on a variety of tours ,” Dean says . “ Summer brings the changing of the guard ceremony each day and the sound and light show each night .”
Guided tours of Ottawa ’ s Parliament buildings give travelers an up-close look at the inner workings of the Canadian government . A popular option takes groups through Centre Block , an iconic building that is home to the Senate , House of Commons and Library of Parliament . Visitors also can watch proceedings in the Senate and the House of Commons whenever these bodies are in session . The grounds of Parliament Hill , which includes Centennial Flame , the War of 1812 Monument , the Peace Tower and a number of sculptures , are highlighted on outdoor walking tours .
Winding its way through the heart of Ottawa , Rideau Canal is a main gathering spot for both locals and visitors . Built between 1826 and 1832 , the stone-walled canal received a UNESCO World Heritage site designation in 2007 , making it Ontario ’ s only UNESCO-recognized attraction .
In the warmer months , boat tours take passengers out on the canal , and its banks are a haven for walkers , in-line skaters and cyclists . Once the water freezes over , the canal becomes the world ’ s largest skating rink — a five-mile stretch of ice that goes past many of the city ’ s major attractions .
