I Want to Go There | U.S. West PORTLAND Crafty Wonderland Portland is a city that takes the “local first” mantra very seriously. The products and innovations of its growing “maker” community underscore the great pride that residents have in creativity-driven businesses. There are many places across the city where travelers can learn more about the wide range of Portland-made products. Crafty Wonderland sells handmade goods from more than 180 of area artists, and Tender Loving Empire offers local items ranging from prints and sculpture to jewelry and home goods. ADX houses a variety of makers in its mixed-use workspaces, learning center and custom fabrication shop. Public tours, which are available three times a week, provide a firsthand looks at the wood and metal shops, as well as offering a chance for visitors to meet resident artisans. Groups also can take part in classes and workshops to learn more about different crafts. The West End area of downtown is home to a number of businesses that are owned by local artisans whose products gained a wide enough audience that they needed their own retail spaces. Clothing, bags and 24 trip planner ADX living accessories are featured at North of the West, while Kiriko uses Japanese textiles to produce apparel and tableware, and Maak Lab offers natural soaps and candles. Another popular spot is Portland Gear, which has a variety of traditional and quirky city souvenirs.
