Known as the “ Archaeological Heart of the Southwest ,” Durango , Colorado , is home to a number of sites where travelers can explore ancient civilizations . They can see cliff dwellings and many other well-preserved structures at Mesa Verde National Park and Chaco Canyon that provide a snapshot of the lives of the Pueblo people who lived in the area from roughly A . D . 600 to 1300 .
Groups can learn more about the area ’ s Old West days by visiting the Strater Hotel or taking a sightseeing train ride with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad . As the train winds through canyons in the remote wilderness of the San Juan National Forest , passengers will find out about the miners , cowboys and settlers that rode the same rails over a century ago .
