NON-EXEMPT CHALLENGES Many companies struggle with the issue of asking non-exempt or hourly employees to spend nonwork time accessing company communications because it can involve legal complications related to overtime. That concern alone makes mobile a nonstarter for many internal communications programs. DoubleTree by Hilton sidesteps that issue by recommending that team members use the mobile app during work hours. Thompson explained, “If you’re on the clock, we encourage you to share on the app because we think that opens a great, powerful dialogue around the world that enables us to be hospitable to our guests.” Hotel management doesn’t view time on the mobile app as goofing off. “There’s no restriction relative to taking a few minutes to record something you think is a powerful message. If you found a way to elevate the guest experience, take the time to post it. If you have a reason to recognize another team member, take the time to do that.” Another important factor is that the app is completely optional. “We don’t mandate it,” she said. “It’s just a channel we’ve opened for team members.” “So if I’m a team member in Beijing, I can connect with a team member in Chicago.”
