A historic flood hit Colorado in September 2013, and a flood devastated parts of northern Wisconsin in July of this year. In Wisconsin, roadway washouts occurred on a segment of STH 13 where Ayres was 50% done with structural design on a new bridge. Plans changed the moment the flooding occurred. Ayres sent a survey crew to the area to get updated surveys of the washout areas, and soon the Wisconsin Department of Transportation asked Ayres to expedite its structure plans as the road was closed to traffic. Now, nearly four months later, the road is fully functional, and Ayres’ projects in the washout area are 100% constructed. It’s been a little over three years since employees in Ayres’ Colorado offices were experiencing a catastrophic flood worthy of national headlines, and staff still is busy on flood recovery work. Engineers are working with the City of Loveland, the Town of Jamestown, Larimer County, and the Colorado Department of Transportation on post-flood work. Communities are reaching the tail end of grant money for master planning and feasibility studies, but design of permanent repairs is still in progress, including the final design of U.S. 34, stretching from Loveland to Estes Park, a major tourist destination at the foot of Rocky Mountain National Park. Final design for this major roadway is still about six months from completion.
