In The Rough

Joe Beatty, Golf Course Director

Our new golf season is underway and Mother Nature still can't decide on the weather! The unusual weather patterns have posed a challenge for the golf business on the revenue and maintenance fronts. Golf revenue suffers when the weather is cool and wet, and so does the golf course. Doug Adams and his team face all kinds of challenges throughout the season, but cool and wet slows their progress. However, if you have experienced either golf course at Treasure Lake this spring, you will have found them to be in outstanding condition from tee to green! My hat is off to Doug and his staff for a job very well done.

Speaking of golf, Treasure Lake was the host for several outside groups in May. Camp Cadet, a fundraising outing for kids to attend camp sponsored by the PA State Police, was played at the Gold Course. Next, "Mo and Marvin" outing put on by the Mountain Men (a large group of hunting camp owners on Rockton Mountain near Clearfield, PA) will be playing the Silver Course. Treasure Lake will be entertaining a new outing at the end of May, the Sabula Firemen will play the Silver Course for their event. Our Ladies' and Mens' golf associations are into the scheduled events with plenty of competition and fun. Upcoming next month our Mens' Member-Guest tournament is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, June 27-29. The Ladies have the Member-Member and "Rally for the Cure" events, which are also scheduled in June.

Big Cats Golf Shop at Treasure Lake golf course is stocked with the latest equipment and apparel from many of the top manufacturers. With a large selection, competitive prices, and the "Touch It, Try It, Buy It" opportunity your local golf shop offers, I hope you will try my shop first. Keep your eyes and ears open for sales and specials in the upcoming months (July 4, *hint*hint) to aid in acquiring that new set of clubs or Treasure Lake apparel for the season.

On a different note, I need to clarify an issue with our golf courses: the Treasure Lake Golf Courses are off-limits to pedestrian and bike traffic during the golf season, April through October. Please refrain from walking, jogging, walking pets, and bike-riding on any parts of the golf courses until the offseason. We, at Treasure Lake, appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Turf Tip

Doug Adams, Golf Course Greens Supervisor

Soil testing is the only true way to know what is going on in the root zone. Soil testing should be done yearly and will give the guidelines on what analysis fertilizer should be applied. All fertilizers have primary

nutrient content, the 3 numbers on the bag separated by hyphens. These numbers designate the percent by mass of nitrogen , phosphorous and potassium. Penn State offers soil testing at the agricultural analytic services Labratory, (814) 863-0841. Soil test reports will show soil ph and have fertilizer recommendations. Testing will give the essential information needed to get the right product down and save money on senseless applications with wrong the product.
