Fly Away by Paetyn Durst

So sudden, on a beautiful day,

You opened your wings… and flew away.

March 6th to be exact

I was hesitant on how to react.

Should I be scared?

That you would… never be repaired,

Should I be calm?

Knowing that... you’d come along.

My closest friend, my other half,

One who I thought, would never pass.

It broke my heart, just to see,

That you would no longer, be with me.

The agony... lying within my heart,

But knowing we will never be apart,

It kills me inside, it really does.

Less traumatizing than it once was.

I’ve learned to grow with the pain inside

Prepared to one day again collide.

So sudden, on a beautiful day,

You opened your wings...and flew away.

Fly Away

By Paetyn Durst

The angel I call after work didn’t answer her phone.

She hasn’t answered the past few nights,

she worries me more than she thinks she does.

Almost every night, just after ten is when I dial her number.

Shouldn’t she know this by now?

The angel I call after work answered the next night.

Last night she must have been sleeping,

she does than more often now.

I walk the five minutes to my house.

I enjoy the sound of her calming voice.

The angel I call after work doesn’t sound good tonight.

Her breath is shaggy, her coughs more frequent,

The tiredness in her voice never ceasing.

“Have a goodnight. Love you.”

“Have a goodnight. Love you too...Grandma.”
