Southern gentleman and proud beard owner Nick Greer has been crafting quality tonal devices for several years now, and the Sonic Boom is one of his earliest creations. Like the other pedals on this list, it features one knob, is made with care, and provides an excellent augmentation to your tone. It offers straightforward clean boost and is an excellent companion to its angry brother… …the Sweetback Driver. This pedal is a dirty boost with one knob labeled “Turn n Burn.” Gotta love it. It adds a similar amount of boost as the Sonic Boom, but instead of being pure and clean, it gets a little nasty. While it doesn’t add a significant amount of distortion, it yields pleasing grit and grime and makes an excellent second gain channel to your favorite dirt boxes. As a standalone pedal, it excels at rhythm crunch and raw, Neil Young-style solo boosting, in case you don’t have a Whizzer on top of your amp. At one point in my guitar playing career, I used a Greer Black Fuzz and Sweetback Driver and had about as much fun as Homer Simpson in the Duff factory. From the looks of it, both pedals are no longer in production, but can be found in the used market. ToneReport.com 37
