Rick Froberg of Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, Obits There’s a line in the Hot Snakes song “Hatchet Job,” From 2004’s Audit in Progress, where Rick Froberg sings “You know I don’t know whether/it’s a job/or what I like.” For me this line neatly sums up the inherent dichotomy of trying to make a living making music. I can’t be sure if this was Froberg’s intent, but he is one man who would certainly know well the internal conflict involved with turning something you love into a job, because in addition to being one of post-hardcore’s 30 TONE TALK // most beloved and influential guitarists and vocalists, he also works a day job as an artist and illustrator. Whether it’s playing guitar or drawing, making art is how he makes money. He has designed album covers, posters, t-shirts and other merch for every band he has ever been in, as well as for other bands and record labels.
