specifi cally a track like “Unity Dub” from
Bad Brains’ Live at CBGB 1982. There are
many chorus, vibe (or both simultaneously)
pedals that will get these tones, but I like Mr.
Black’s Double Chorus for its lushness and
elegant simplicity, and the EarthQuaker Sea
Machine for its haunting, otherworldly luster.
Innovation dub
The beauty of dub is that its very existence
is predicated on sonic innovation. It is fully
expected then that the dub instrumentalist
will actively strive to create new sounds
and textures in the context of the music.
For the sonically adventurous guitarist,
this can be an inspiring vehicle for effects
experimentation well beyond what is
traditional and assumed. As such, anything
from synth pedals and harmonizers to
EQ, OD, fuzz and distortion pedals might
potentially fi nd use in a dub performance.
Modern artists are pushing the genre ever
forward into unexplored territory, where
any sound found might potentially be of
use. Try everything.
