It ’ s small , it ’ s orange , it has a single knob , and it makes the vast majority of phaser sounds that any guitar , bass , or keys player will ever need . From the slow , hypnotic sense of movement it imparts at its lowest speed to the watery , enveloping funk it creates at its highest , the M101 will just about do it all . It sells brand spanking new for about eighty bucks . These are the pros . Cons ? Well , the non-true bypass is kind of a tone-sucker , and when placed after distortion it can get a bit swishy . Many of us love the M101 anyway .

The CSP026 is a faithful recreation of the original script Phase 90 used on the first Van Halen record , among other classic recordings , and it is as rich and gooey as a Caramello bar melting in a glove compartment on a hot summer ’ s day . Enhanced headroom combined with a gently tamed midrange results in a big , warm character that the standard model lacks , and hand-wiring and select components give it a little extra touch of the boutique sexy . It lacks a power supply jack and an LED , but so did the original . The ‘ 74 Vintage Phase 90 requires commitment .
